Farming, like most aspects of life, takes patience. Our philosophy is to take our time on this journey. Allowing space for the breath to be full and deep, time to sit and watch as the light shifts from dawn to light and dusk to dark, and willingness to let go and allow nature to take it's course. As we embark on this path of learning we intend to share our thoughts and photos of what happens to arise.

Oh the glory of working outdoors on a beautiful sunny day. We were over due and it was awesome. Matthew pruned the English walnut tree next to the chicken house and we built a waddle fence around our garlic bed and planted greens there. It felt so great to be outside and sweat and breath fresh air. My body is so happy.

Chickens round 2. The first 10 were killed by Flo, our wild, stray dog, the very first day we had them…very incredibly sad. This second batch seem do be doing real well aside from the one we found dead this morning, which is quite normal since their lives are so fragile in the first couple weeks. Poor little guys just trying to make it. Today it was 85 degrees out and we let the Rhode Island Reds, who are 4 weeks old, run around in the outdoors chicken yard. They looked so happy doing their chicken thang!

Our seed starting efforts have begun.

A little over a month ago we started our onions, leeks, and celeriac indoors under 4ft T8 florescent bulbs hanging from the ceiling.

Then we added peppers, tomatoes and eggplant in recycled clam shell containers.

In our portable indoor/outdoor greenhouse we started our brassicas. They are progressing quite slowly since it’s been damn cold here so far this spring.

Planted Peas out in the garden in mid March as well, it may have been a mistake since it got really cold in the days that followed, but who knows maybe we’ll have the earliest peas around?

Flo (Florence) mama

Slow Lane Farm moves to Lansing! Today Matthew and I explored our neighborhood here on the eastside for vacant lots to farm. We found a few good options and are hoping to continue our growing explorations as spring approaches. We’re hoping to be able to get into the Allen street market on Wednesdays and the East Lansing market on Sundays. More to come as winter wears on and spring quickly approaches.

The garden August, 1.

Makin Boc Choi Kim Chee!

Mmmmm Macaroni and cheese.  This isn’t your run of the mill mac and cheese, we’re talkin’ about fresh veggies from the garden- squash, broccoli, cauliflower, garlic -  sauteed in yesterdays bacon grease(note, this step is essential).  Cook your choice of pasta al dente.  Mix one stick of butter, two cups milk, three tablespoon flower simmered together until thick.  Combine veggies, pasta and sauce in baking dish.  Top with cracker crumbs and grated cheese.  Bake it - 350 for 20 minutes.  Enjoy.
